What do the Boston Red Sox do with Marcelo Mayer?
The team’s No. 3 prospect and No. 9 in all of baseball is making his presence felt for Triple-A Worcester with a .273 batting average, an .833 OPS, and seven home runs through 121 at-bats and showcasing smooth defense at shortstop.
However, with Trevor Story and four years left on a six-year, $140 million deal, there is no obvious spot for the 22-year-old Mayer in Boston.
Here is what Story had to say amid speculation that his replacement could be on the way:
“It doesn’t bother me,” Story said, per Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. “I think Marcelo is a great player. It’s up to the front office to find ways to make it work. I’ve always said it’s never bad having too many good players.”
Story, who has only won a Wild Card postseason game, is taking the right approach. At 32-years-old and devoid of October success, his team-first mindset should have a positive impact on the rest of a clubhouse vying to carve out their place in Red Sox history.
He has been just okay at the plate, with a .252 batting average, a .662 OPS, and an 85 OPS+ with five home runs and seven stolen bases. However, Story also has 45 strikeouts to six walks and despite his speed on the bags, is not the same rangy defender he once was.
Regardless of the hiccups and as long as he is healthy, manager Alex Cora should keep him in the lineup and trust his veteran to figure it out at the plate. The Red Sox may never get the prime, Colorado Rockies version of Story, but he is still a proven Big League batter and could be an X-factor for this team.
If Boston wants to expedite the Mayer process, he could spell Kristian Campbell at second base on his off-days or outfield starts.
