Boston Red Sox fans must wait to see all their Big 3 prospects in the MLB. Kristian Campbell has been called up and will likely start at second base, but for Marcelo Mayer, his 2025 campaign will begin in Triple-A Worcester.
Mayer recently shared with reporters his thoughts on the assignment, via The Boston Globe:
Obviously, I would love to be a big leaguer. I’d love to start this year in Dallas, but things don’t add up the way that you want them to sometimes. So I’m just going to go to Triple-A, keep playing the game that I love to play, try to get better every day so when my time is called, I’m ready to go.
It’s a healthy mindset for the 22-year-old phenom. Manager Alex Cora wants his top prospects playing regularly, no matter which level, so while this is not quite the time for Mayer in the MLB, he will get plenty of opportunities in Triple-A.
He was never going to beat out Trevor Story for the starting shortstop gig, and he can play second base, but Campbell seems to be the better fit on the right side of the infield.
Mayer is not undeserving of an MLB spot and will be called up sometime this summer. He put together an impressive spring training with a .333 batting average, .982 OPS, one home run, and 11 RBIs over 36 at-bats. He also displayed intense eyes with an 8 to 11 walk-to-strikeout ratio.
There is no prominent landing spot for Mayer on this current Red Sox team. Besides Story, the team is littered with infielders like Alex Bregman, Rafael Devers, Triston Casas, Campbell, and backup David Hamilton.
However, should someone go on the injured list or simply not perform to the professional standards, Mayer could find himself in the lineup sooner rather than later.
Until then, he must continue his hot streak at the plate and rangy defense in Triple-A to earn a job in Boston.
