If Rafael Devers became available by the Boston Red Sox, nearly every team in Major League Baseball would be interested. Sure, there are a few teams that could instantly be off the list given where their payroll stand or not being in a position to win, but for the most part, teams would call.
Devers, arguably a top five to 10 hitter in the sport, is among the elite of the elite and would be wanted.
Regarding teams that could be interested in him, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report named the New York Mets as one.
He added that the Mets might be interested in bringing Pete Alonso back during the offseason if he opts out of his deal, but that the Mets could use some corner infield help, depending on what happens over the next few months.
“New York Mets: If Pete Alonso opts out and actually leaves Queens this offseason, the Mets instantly become a much more serious suitor for a top-tier corner infielder,” he wrote.
Devers has suggested that he won't play first base for the Red Sox. It remains uncertain, however, if he'd be willing to play first for a different organization.
Perhaps he'd be down to give it first base a try if the Mets traded for him, but penciling him in at third base seems to be the smart thing to do regarding any potential talks of the Mets trading for him.
Now, the Mets have shown that they're willing to spend with the best of them, but that might not mean they're interested in Devers.
He's very expensive and a below-average infielder.
Sure, his bat makes up for it, but it isn't like he's a perfect player, something the Mets might be cautious of.
