Red Sox's Alex Bregman Plans Revealed Heading Into Trade Deadline Questions

Even if the Boston Red Sox go on a perfect stretch over the next month before the July 31 trade deadline, it's tough to find a reason for them to go out and be buyers.

While the Red Sox have a great farm system and could potentially trade some of those players for big league talent, there isn't much of a reason to. The fact of the matter is that for the past year and a half, Boston has been a .500 ball club, and nothing has suggested that this team will have a chance to win a World Series.

When searching for what the team might do during the deadline, a recent article from the Boston Globe outlined what the Red Sox's plans could be.

“Their focus should be on signing (Alex) Bregman to an extension and using the trade deadline to make improvements without mortgaging the future,” the Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham wrote.

“Going all-in at the deadline would mean going after two starters (say Sandy Alcantara and Freddy Peralta) and a hitter such as Josh Naylor, Ryan O’Hearn, or Marcell Ozuna,” Abraham continued. “Given their foundational issues, it wouldn’t be wise for the Red Sox to expend the prospect capital needed to make such trades.

As Abraham touched on, getting something done with Bregman should be a priority.

If the Red Sox believe that he wants to stay in Boston for the long term, which seems likely, given some of his comments, there's no reason not to keep him around.

If they want to go all in and the Red Sox attempt to win a World Series as early as this season, acquiring another starter makes sense. However, that would also be a lot to give up if they were to add both of the names he mentioned, Sandy Alcantara and Freddy Peralta.
