Facing offensive struggles and defensive mishaps, Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story was previously removed from the lineup by manager Alex Cora. Story made a crucial error in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Cora is not happy.
According to Keagan Stiefel of the New England Sports Network, Cora placed blame on critical errors like the one that Story caused, costing the team runs in what turned into an 8-4 loss after holding a 3-0 lead.
"If you look back at the season, there’s been a lot of those that have slipped through our hands and honestly, we’re in the position where we are because of that," Cora said.
The 32-year-old entered 2025 as a key veteran, playing on a six-year, $140 million contract he signed in 2022. Still, midseason numbers are well below expectations.
Story is hitting a mediocre .244, but has 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. However, he has already struck out 100 times in 2025 and walked 16 times.
The Red Sox veteran was brought in as an anchor alongside Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman. Now that Devers is gone and there are rumors of Bregman being dealt at the trade deadline, Boston needs Story to deliver on offense and defense. They cannot afford any more struggles from their veteran leaders.
Cora has commented on Story's previous struggles dating back to May, but was less pointed in their comments.
"Maybe just kind of back up and watch the game from a different perspective... just relax and clear your mind. Hopefully that benefits him,” Cora said.
The Red Sox are currently 43-45 and would need some drastic improvement if they want to have a shot at making the playoffs. Right now it seems like the team may just be weathering the storm.
