Red Sox's Nathan Eovaldi to miss start due to calf injury

Boston Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will skip at least one start due to a right calf injury that began nagging him this past Saturday.

As Bill Ladson wrote for MLB.com, Eovaldi first noticed the issue during a throwing session two days after he faced the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 20. The 30-year-old went seven innings and allowed one earned run and five hits as Boston defeated Baltimore 7-1.

Eovaldi was originally scheduled to take the bump against the Toronto Blue Jays in Buffalo on Wednesday evening.

“Right now, we are being careful," Eovaldi told reporters. "I didn’t even try to throw my bullpen. Playing catch, I can feel [the cramp] a little bit."

Fellow righty Colten Brewer, who has two starts under his belt this year, is expected to replace Eovaldi on Wednesday. Brewer, 27, possesses a 3.50 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 9 appearances this summer.

The rebuilding Red Sox entered Tuesday last in the American League East with a 9-20 record.
