The Cincinnati Reds are set to begin a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Before the game, the Reds announced two roster moves. Right-handed pitcher Chase Petty was recalled from Triple-A while right-handed pitcher Zach Maxwell was optioned to Triple-A.
Although Cincinnati was swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates this past weekend, the Reds are still competing this year. The ball club is currently in second place in the National League Central standings, trailing the Chicago Cubs by two games.
The Reds are hoping to continue to play well, and this upcoming four-game series will prove to be crucial. Petty could help Cincinnati bounce back following the difficult series over the weekend.
Petty, 23, made his only three appearances in 2025 at the MLB level. The right-handed hurler struggled, as he surrendered 14 runs (13 earned).
He has turned in a 4.38 ERA across six starts at Triple-A this year. Petty is looking for a better overall performance this time at the big league level.
Maxwell, meanwhile, is a 25-year-old right-handed pitcher. He appeared in only one game with the Reds this season, allowing four runs in one inning of work. Overall, Maxwell has surrendered nine runs in 11 innings pitched in MLB.
The roster moves will not make or break the season, but Petty could make an impact nonetheless.
Cincinnati will attempt to climb back in the standings this week. The Cubs are always a difficult ball club to defeat at Wrigley Field, but the Reds have been able to upset expectations throughout the 2026 campaign.
