The New York Yankees trade for third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies officially removes them from the chase for Eugenio Suárez.
The deal, which sends pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz to Colorado, fills New York's infield hole. With the Yankees out of the mix, the focus shifts to the Cincinnati Reds. Rumor mills are buzzing about a potential reunion.
The Reds rank 18th in MLB with 107 home runs this season, underscoring their need for a proven power bat.
That's where Jim Bowden of The Athletic sees an opportunity. In a recent column, Bowden proposed a bold move to address the Reds' biggest need.
"The Reds have the pitching to make the playoffs as a wild-card team but lack that one power hitter to get them there," Bowden wrote. "Acquiring Suárez would be a game-changer for their lineup and drastically improve their chances of playing in October."
Bowden's hypothetical deal:
Reds receive:3B Eugenio Suárez (now with Arizona)
Diamondbacks receive:3B Cam Collier, RHP Chase Petty, LHP Adam Serwinoski
Suárez is having a fantastic season, slashing .252/.325/.593 with 36 home runs and a MLB-leading 86 RBIs. Only Cal Raleigh, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani have hit more home runs, and Suárez is set to hit free agency after the season.
In return, Arizona would land three high-upside pieces. Petty, 22, has a fastball that reaches 100 mph; he has a 4.14 ERA over 15 Triple-A starts and some MLB exposure this season. Serwinoski has racked up 86 strikeouts in 70 High-A innings. Collier, 20, is already boasting a .299/.422/.414 slash in the minors. He was the MVP of the Futures Game last year and is seen as the centerpiece of the return package.
With the Yankees having committed to McMahon, the Reds could be in a strong position for the right price. They have pitching depth and a need for a power bat move.
