The Cincinnati Reds entered Thursday with a one-game deficit for the final NL wild card spot, behind the New York Mets. The Reds have a chance to make the postseason for the first time since 2020 under their first-year manager Terry Francona. The Reds’ starting pitching staff has impressed this year, and while Hunter Greene continues to be the ace, Nick Lodolo has emerged as the team’s best left-hander.
The 27-year-old southpaw is in his fourth season with the Reds and, after two injury-riddled campaigns, has had the best season of his tenure. Over 28 starts this year, Lodolo has posted an 8–8 record, 3.30 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 156 strikeouts over 155 2/3 innings of work.
Lodolo was dealing during his start Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, attempting to steer the Reds back on track after dropping two straight. He had gotten through 6 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
However, his outing was cut short after a visit from trainers in the top of the seventh inning following a strikeout. With concerns mounting over whether Lodolo had suffered a serious injury, the Reds made an announcement.
The team wrote on X, “#Reds LHP Nick Lodolo exited today's game as a precaution with a right groin injury.”

This is a positive development for the Reds that it’s precautionary, but Lodolo will still need to recover and Cincinnati will hope he does not experience lingering soreness.
If he’s able to bounce back, Lodolo would likely start the second game of a possible wild card series. The Reds will have to get past the Milwaukee Brewers in the final three games of the regular season in order to make it to the playoffs.
