Reds place rookie SP Hunter Greene on 15-day IL with right shoulder strain

Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Reds parted ways with starting pitchers Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle in trade deadline day deals.

On Friday, the Reds lost another starter, placing rookie right-hander Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.

Greene is 4-12 with a 5.26 ERA in 20 starts for the Reds this season.

The Reds selected the 22-year-old with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 MLB draft.

Greene is coming off one of his best starts of the season. In his most recent outing on Aug. 1 against the Miami Marlins, Greene pitched six shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight.

According to Stats By Stats, Greene is the only rookie in the modern era to have three games pitching six-plus innings with eight or more strikeouts while allowing a hit or less.

The Reds recalled right-handed reliever Ryan Hendrix to fill Greene's spot on the active roster.

The 27-year-old has a 4.26 ERA in seven appearances for the Reds this season. He went 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 27 games for Triple-A Louisville.

Hendrix made his major league debut last season for the Reds, posting a 5-1 record and a 5.97 ERA in 27 games.
