The Reds activated Austin Hays from the injured list and recalled Chase Petty and Will Benson from Triple-A Louisville on Friday.
As expected, the Reds placed ace Hunter Greene on the injured list with a grade one strain of his right groin in his start against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and sent outfielders Blake Dunn and Jacob Hurtubise to Louisville.
Hays strained his left hamstring scoring from first base on a double by Gavin Lux on April 28 in a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Hays was hitting .365 when he went down with three doubles, five home runs, and 13 RBI. He was 6-for-17 in his last five games.
Greene is 4-2 in eight starts with a 2.36 ERA. He is third in MLB with 61 strikeouts and second with 12.022 strikeouts per nine innings.
Petty made his first major league appearance on April 0th in the second game of the doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed nine runs on seven hits, including two home runs, in 2.1 innings. Petty rebounded in Louisville, however, and pitched six hitless innings in his last start.
“It looked like he wanted to run through the line when he came into the dugout against the Cardinals. He threw everything hard, he was so amped up. He’ll learn,” Terry Francona revealed after his debut.
Benson was sent to Louisville to polish his swing before the season started. He was recalled on April 7 and started a game in San Francisco on April 9. He struck out in all four at-bats and was sent down. Benson this season ranks among International League leaders in RBI (29, T-4th), R (26, T-4th), TB (63, T-7th), and HR (7, T-7th).
Dunn was really struggling at the plate since the start of the season. He is hitting .150 in 30 games with two doubles, a home run, and seven RBI. Dunn did have a .320 on-base percentage with only nine hits. He walked eight times and reached seven times when hit by pitches, which leads the Major Leagues.
Hurtubise started the season on the big club but was a fill-in used mostly as a pinch runner and defensive replacement in this recall. He was 0-for-5 in three games this stint.
