Reds Stop Playing Short Handed

The Reds played short-handed in the last three games.

Jake Fraley was kept out of action for the last three games with left calf tenderness. The Reds put Fraley on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 7.

Connor Joe was called to fill the roster spot. The Reds acquired Joe in a trade for minor league pitcher Andrew Moore during the game in Houston Friday night. Tyler Callihan was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

The former number one pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014 is an outfielder and first baseman. He played in seven games with the San Diego Padres early in the season but was 0-for-9 and sent to El Paso.

Joe was with the Reds in spring training in 2018 after being selected from the Los Angeles Dodgers roster in the Rule V draft. The Reds traded him to the San Francisco Giants for minor leaguer Jordan Johnson. He broke into the big leagues and played in 16 games with the Giants in 2019, but was later returned to the Dodgers. A team must keep a Rule 5 player on the big league roster the entire season or return him to the team he was drafted.

He had one hit in 15 at-bats. He opted out of the 2020 COVID-19 season due to a testicular cancer diagnosis..

Joe played for the Colorado Rockies for two seasons and the Pirates for three before he was granted free agency. The Padres signed him over the winter. Joe is a native of San Diego and played college baseball at San Diego State.

Joe played in 133 games with the Pirates in his best season in 2023. He hit a career-high .247 with 31 doubles, four triples, and 11 home runs. He drove in 42 runs.

Fraley goes on the injured list with a .205 batting average with three doubles, three homers, and nine RBI.

He had four hits in his last 29 at-bats.

The Reds have four left-handed bats among their 13 position players, including switch-hitter Elly De La Cruz.
