Report: Angels interested in trading for Cubs catcher Willson Contreras

The Los Angeles Angels are looking to upgrade from Max Stassi and Anthony Bemboom at catcher. It appears they have a target in sight, and it's not the league's most coveted free agent in J.T. Realmuto.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Angels are interested in acquiring Chicago Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras, reuniting him with former manager Joe Maddon. Rosenthal adds that a deal isn't close, though L.A.'s interest isn't surprising given how highly Maddon thinks of Contreras.

Chicago has had discussions with multiple teams about Contreras, according to FanSided's Robert Murray. It's unclear which other clubs are interested in the All-Star catcher.

Contreras is under contract for two more seasons. He's been one of the best catchers both at and behind the plate, hitting .265 with 74 home runs and 253 RBI in five seasons with the Cubs.

L.A.'s interest in Contreras also probably stems from the fact that Stassi underwent hip surgery and could miss the beginning of the 2021 campaign, scheduled to begin next month with training camp.
