Despite owning one of the worst records in baseball, the Atlanta Braves weren’t the typical sellers at the trade deadline. In fact, they actually did more buying than they did selling, acquiring a couple of starting pitchers for depth purposes and an intriguing relief arm in Tyler Kinley, who will be auditioning for the 2026 roster over the final two months of the season.
But the Braves weren’t just thinking about buying small at the trade deadline. According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, they were one of several teams that inquired about Twins All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton.
“One source said the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets showed the most interest in Buxton,” Hayes wrote. He would add that the Braves were one of two teams that pushed extremely hard.

During the All-Star break, Byron Buxton made it clear that he had no intention of waiving his no-trade clause. And his feelings never wavered, even as the Twins offloaded nearly every valuable player on their entire roster at the trade deadline.
“It’s always good to be wanted,” Buxton said. “Don’t get me wrong. But the only place I want is Minnesota. All of my choices are easy. I ain’t got but one place on my mind. That’s how it’ll be.”
Buxton is one of the league’s premier talents. The only thing that’s stopped him over the course of his career has been health. He’s never played in more than 140 games in a season and has played in more than 100 games just twice.
But even with the injury concerns, his contract makes him an extremely enticing piece. Buxton is under contract through 2028 and is owed just over $45 million. He would be a tremendous addition to a Braves outfield that has a lot of questions, and while he doesn’t seem interested in going anywhere today, it will be interesting to see if these conversations continue in the future.
