Report: Braves will not trade Sean Murphy, they love Murphy/Baldwin tandem

The MLB trade deadline is today, and the only player Alex Anthopoulos has moved is Rafael Montero to the Tigers, but he shouldn’t be the only one.

It’s a seller’s market, and Atlanta has several relievers that could fetch a pretty penny — Rasiel Iglesias, Pierce Johnson, and Aaron Bummer. Marcell Ozuna has also been the subject of trade rumors, but one name the Braves won’t be listening on, which has become very clear, is Sean Murphy.

Buster Olney reported recently that Atlanta’s All-Star catcher isn’t available for trade, and Jon Morosi reported yesterday the same thing. The Braves have no plans to trade Sean Murphy; they like the tandem of him and Drake Baldwin.

The market for Sean Murphy would be red hot if the Braves elected to trade him. It’s not often that top five catchers hit the market, especially ones under team control at a more than reasonable rate for several years. The Braves would be able to fetch a haul, but that’s likely to be the case whether they trade him now or in the offseason, when Alex Anthopoulos might reconsider.

The Braves very clearly have an infatuation for having two high caliber catchers on the roster at the same time. Dating back to 2022, they’ve had three different catchers make the All-Star Game, and most expect Baldwin will soon become the fourth.

It’s a luxury they’ve been afforded for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, they’ve done a really good job of drafting and developing catchers. Shea Langiliers, William Contreras, and Drake Baldwin are all young backstops the Braves developed. Secondly, because the rest of the roster has been so pristine, they’ve also been able to spend some extra cash at the position.

With that being said, how much the Braves love having two All-Star caliber catchers on the roster will be tested this offseason. There are now a lot of holes on this roster, and trading one of Murphy or Baldwin could help fill some of those in a big way.
