Report: Cardinals' Adam Wainwright making $17.5 million in 2022

It was learned last week that the St. Louis Cardinals would be starting 40-year-old right-handed veteran Adam Wainwright for what became Wednesday's National League wild-card game at the Los Angeles Dodgers and also that Wainwright had signed a deal to remain with the Cardinals through the 2022 season.

The Associated Press (h/t ESPN) has provided details on that agreement.

Per The AP, Wainwright is guaranteed $17.5 million for 2022 after the three-time All-Star and one-time World Series champion earned $8 million this season. The contract includes a full no-trade provision, and Wainwright can block any transaction because he is a 10-year veteran who has spent five seasons with the club.

Wainwright ended the regular season at 17-7 with a 3.05 ERA across 32 starts and already has 28 postseason appearances on his resume ahead of Wednesday's outing. Manager Mike Shildt told reporters this past Thursday he intends to start Wainwright at the Dodgers but will also have "all hands on deck" as it pertains to other available pitchers.
