Report: Cubs, one-time All-Star C Yan Gomes agree to two-year, $13 million deal

The Chicago Cubs are adding a new backstop for the 2022 MLB season.

Catcher Yan Gomes is in agreement on a two year $13 million dollar guaranteed contract with the Chicago Cubs per sources.

After debuting with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, Gomes was traded to the then-Cleveland Indians in the offseason. Gomes spent the next six seasons in Cleveland, setting career-highs in home runs (21), RBI (74), hits (135), runs scored (61) and total bases (229) across a career-high 518 plate appearances in 135 games during the 2014 campaign.

Gomes earned a Silver Slugger award that season and in 2018 during his final season in Cleveland, was named an All-Star. Gomes finished 2018 with 16 home runs and 48 RBI in 112 games that year.

The 34-year-old was traded to the Washington Nationals in the offseason heading into 2019 and split time with Kurt Suzuki behind the dish that season, earning a World Series title. Gomes spent the 2020 pandemic-shortened season with Washington and was moved to the Oakland Athletics at the 2021 trade deadline.
