The Cubs’ starting pitching this year has been subpar. In June, they had the seventh-worst starting pitching ERA in the league at 4.87. This is close to their season ERA, which sits at 4.47. The Cubs front office has made it known that they will address this problem at the trade deadline. With their many unfortunate injuries, if they want a chance at a World Series title, they must find better pitching . Could one of their guys be Lucas Giolito? Reported by George Ofman, he says that the Cubs have “their eyes” on Lucas Giolito.
Told the Cubs have their eyes on Lucas Giolito, but thus far, there is no indication the Red Sox are ready to make any more significant trades. He’s 5-1 with a 3.66 ERA

Although this information isn’t concrete, it is a step in the right direction. As Ofman said, the Red Sox aren’t confirmed sellers yet, but if they reach that status, Lucas Giolito would be a great target for the Cubs to pursue.
Giolito has been in the majors since 2016 and has had a very solid career, including one all-star game appearance. This year for the Red Sox, he has started 13 games and has compiled a 6-1 record with a 3.36 ERA. These numbers would be ideal for any team, much less a team in the Cubs, whose main weakness is starting pitching. Additionally, Giolito shouldn’t be too expensive if the Cubs pursue him, considering his short-term deal with the Red Sox.
Giolito has had some injury troubles in the past, including UCL problems that led to him missing the entire 2024 season. Not only that, but he also missed some time at the beginning of this season due to a hamstring injury obtained in Spring Training. On the bright side, he has pitched exceptionally well since his return, so his hamstring and UCL appear to be doing okay. Even if the Cubs had to give up a decent amount for Giolito, he would be a worthwhile investment as the Cubs are desperate for starting pitching.
