Report: Padres close to signing All-Star SP Joe Musgrove to five-year, $100M extension

The San Diego Padres are reportedly close to locking up All-Star starting pitcher Joe Musgrove for the next five seasons.

According to Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Padres and Musgrove are nearing an agreement on a five-year contract extension worth $100 million.

Musgrove, 29, is due to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2022 season.

This season, Musgrove is 8-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 17 starts for the Padres. The seven-year veteran was voted to his first All-Star Game earlier this month.

The Padres acquired Musgrove in a three-team trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets in 2021.

Last season, his first with the Padres, Musgrove posted an 11-9 record with a 3.18 ERA in 32 starts.

Since making his MLB debut in 2016, Musgrove is 48-50 with a 3.83 ERA in 131 career starts for the Houston Astros, Pirates and Padres.
