Report: Robert Suarez could rejoin the Braves soon

One of the biggest developments over the final month for the Braves won’t take place on the field. It involves the continued rehabilitation of Robert Suarez and getting him primed for October. That’s been the plan for a while now, and the All-Star reliever is set to take a giant step in the right direction this week.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, Suarez will throw a couple of bullpens over the next few days, after which the Braves will decide the next steps. Bowman adds that Suarez expects to return before the end of the regular season.

The Braves have handled this entire situation extraordinarily cautiously. Suarez has been out since mid-June with elbow inflammation, and he didn’t start throwing until a couple of weeks ago. Now comes the final step — getting on a mound. If he can do that pain-free, the Braves shouldn’t have much reason to hold off on adding him to the active roster. They’d surely like to get him facing major-league hitters well before the postseason.

The good news is that Suarez is a reliever. If he were a starter who needed to ramp up his workload over the final month, the odds of him having much impact would be slim to none. But he’s likely already as stretched out as he needs to be. As long as there are no setbacks, we should see him this season — which would restore a sorely missed element to a Braves bullpen with enough talent to carry this team through October when it’s whole.
