Reviewing the Athletics 2025 Deadline Moves

The July 31 trade deadline is now in the rear-view mirror. Clubs reevaluate their place in the standings. They make moves accordingly. This may involve setting up for a playoff run or giving prospects a first look at big league competition.

Athletics Trade Deadline

The Athletics, of course, are in no position to make a playoff push. However, they’ve already called up and gotten strong contributions from some of their hitting prospects. What remains is for the A’s pitching prospects to get a chance to impress. And the club certainly made room for said pitching prospects with their first trade of the deadline. They sent startling pitcher JP Sears to the San Diego Padres. Reliever Mason Miller was also included in the deal. In return, the Athletics got four prospects. The group is highlighted by the Padres’ top overall prospect. This prospect is MLB Pipeline’s number three overall, SS Leo De Vries. Also in the package were three right-handed pitching prospects: Braden Nett, the Padres’ number 3 prospect, Henry Baez, the Padres’ number 13 prospect; and Eduardiel Nunez, the Padres’ number 17 prospect.

The A’s waited until the last minute to make their only other move of the trade deadline, this time sending infielder Miguel Andujar to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for 22-year-old RHP prospect Kenya Huggins. The Reds’ number 22 prospect is currently in High-A and will likely join De Vries with the Lansing Lugnuts. The departed Athletics Sears and Miller, with a 4.95 and 3.67 ERA, respectively, both had time beyond this season, hence the higher price tags. Conversely, Andujar, with his .296 average and his .765 OPS, is on an expiring contract.
