Rockies add another veteran SP to deepen their rotation

After having the worst starting pitchers' ERA in Major League Baseball last season (6.65), the Colorado Rockies have revamped their starting rotation by adding veteran arms to turn things around.

Signing right-hander Michael Lorenzen earlier in the offseason (one year, $8 million) and signing longtime NPB star Tomoyuki Sugano (one year, $5.1 million), the Rockies are also finalizing a deal to add veteran left-hander Jose Quintana on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. Quintana, 37, will be entering his 15th big league season and will be pitching for his ninth major league club.

Quintana has been a solid starting pitcher in his career, posting a 3.76 career ERA and going 11-7 with a 3.96 ERA (24 starts) and striking out 89 batters in 131.2 innings in 2025.

Rockies have a full starting rotation with addition of Jose Quintana

The Rockies adding Quintana gives them a "deep" rotation with Lorenzen, Sugano, Quintana, Kyle Freeland, Ryan Feltner and Chase Dollander, offering options to fill out their starting five. Quintana, along with Sugano, Lorenzen and Freeland, will all be in the running to start Opening Day for manager Warren Schaeffer.

Quintana is the Rockies' only other left-hander in their rotation (Freeland), with the others being right-handed. Quintana also offers the Rockies another trade piece to use at the deadline, but he may struggle pitching in the altitude of Colorado.

Mainly a sinker (44 percent usage) and a changeup pitcher (22 percent), Quintana may need to rely more on his four-seam fastball (12 percent) and curveball (15 percent), as the altitude flattens pitches that move laterally. Switching up his pitch mix could offer Quintana success.
