Rockies prospect Zac Veen makes statement in spring training debut

With the expectation to start the season in the minor leagues, Rockies' top outfield prospect Zac Veen has a goal to force his way into the big league plans.

In his first action of the spring, Veen laced an RBI double in his first at-bat after pinch-hitting for Cole Tucker in the sixth inning. The next time up to the plate Veen blasted a solo home run to right field, He would end the day 2-3 after a strikeout in the ninth inning.

"I'm here to show who Zac Veen is -- that's the point," Veen told MLB.com's Thomas Harding. It's simple. Right there. I'm here to help the team win, and I want to be a part of this."

Colorado's first-round pick in 2020, Veen dominated his first season in the minor leagues as a 19-year-old in 2021. Taking a step back in 2022, he fizzled at the plate after being promoted to Double-A but was able to put up respectable numbers despite the struggles.

With a smooth swing from the left-hand side, Veen is able to generate consistent hard contact and has sneaky power for his wiry frame.

With 91 stolen bases in two minor league seasons, Veen has above-average speed mixed with excellent instincts on the bases. This allows him to be a threat to steal at any time.

Speaking with Harding, Rockies manager Bud Black had glowing remarks about Veen.

"He runs the bases hard and plays a good, solid outfield. And just the physical nature of him now -- he's got a presence with his look. I think he's going to be a good player. But there are some adjustments he's going to have to make, and he's making them."

Veen will look to continue his hot start as he tries to unseat one of the veterans on the MLB roster.
