Roger Maris Jr. congratulates Aaron Judge on 62nd home run

Roger Maris Jr. on Aaron Judge's 62nd HR: 'We can now celebrate a new clean home run king!'

It was a historic moment for New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.

Leading off for the Yankees against the Texas Rangers, Judge took a hanging slider that clocked in at 88 miles per hour and cranked it into the left field bleachers. As the ball landed 391 feet away into the hands of an extremely lucky fan (who is already getting offers of $2 million for the baseball), Judge accomplished American League history.

A few nights ago, Judge tied former Yankee Roger Maris on top of the American League leaderboard for most home runs in a single season with 61.

On Tuesday night, Judge passed Maris and is now the undisputed American League home run king. Maris died in 1985, but his son, Roger Maris Jr., is around and he offered Judge heartfelt congratulations on Twitter.

Maris Jr. isn't referencing his father as the "dirty" home run king. He's clearly talking about Barry Bonds, who holds the MLB single-season home run record with 73 home runs in 2001.

Bonds, of course, was the face of the "steroid-era" of MLB baseball along with Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa. McGuire hit 70 home runs in 1998 while Sosa was right behind him with 66.

It is interesting to note that while Roger Maris Jr. clearly called the likes of Bonds out, he did show reverence to Bonds just a tweet before the one he sent out to Judge.

"Barry Bonds is the best baseball player ever," Maris Jr. tweeted. "What Bonds did in 2001 was the most dominate hitting performance ever. I know Bonds is the single season home run champ (73) based on the CURRENT record books. Home run records have been SEPARATED before … I like Judge better!!"

Cubs Continue Targeting Pirates Starting Pitcher

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher is one of the most valued at his position heading into the MLB trade deadline, with a division rival pushing hard. Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported that the Chicago Cubs are looking for another starting pitcher ahead of the trade deadline on July 31, that they're going after Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller and would part with their top prospect, outfielder Owen Caissie, in a trade. "The Cubs desperately want another starter at the deadline, targeting Mitch Keller of the Pirates, and would include outfield prospect Owen Caissie to make it work," Nightengale wrote. Keller has had an excellent season, despite a 4-10 record in 21 starts. He has 15 quality starts, tied for the most in the MLB. A quality start is when a starting pitcher throws six innings and allows three runs or fewer. He has a 3.53 ERA over 125.0 innings pitched, 97 strikeouts to 30 walks, a .239 opposing batting average, a 1.16 WHIP and his innings pitched rank 16th most in the MLB. Keller signed a five-year, $77 million contract on Feb. 22, 2024 and currently makes $15,411,500 in 2025, the most a Pirates player is earning this season on their payroll. He is only one of two players making more than $10 million this season, along with outfielder Bryan Reynolds at $12,250,000. His salary increases $1.5 million each year over the next two seasons, to $16,911,000 in 2026 and then $18,411,000 in 2027, then an increase of $2 million in 2028 to $20,411,000. The Cubs, who are battling with the Miwaukee Brewers for the National League Central Division Title in 2025, could use a proven starting pitcher like Keller, with three more years of team control, even if it means parting with their top prospect in Caissie. Caissie is hitting .278/.377/.563 for an OPS of .940 in 81 games at Triple-A, with 86 hits, 24 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 46 RBIs and 46 walks to 105 strikeouts. He ranks tied for second in the International League in home runs, fifth in slugging percentage, sixth in OPS, eighth in strikeouts, ninth in doubles, 15th in walks, 17th in hits and tied for 18th in on-base percentage. MLB Pipeline ranks the 23 year old as the Cubs' top prospect and the 37th best prospect in baseball. The Pirates rank amongst the worst teams in baseball in numerous hitting statistics and Caissie, at 23-years old, could serve as an important bat for the team going forward, if a trade does occur. Keller has also received trade interest from the New York Yankees, the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays, all teams competing for a spot in the playoffs.

Cowboys make questionable move amid Micah Parsons stalemate

The Dallas Cowboys extended one of their stars Sunday, just not the one fans wanted them to pay. At Cowboys training camp Saturday, Dallas fans serenaded owner Jerry Jones with "Pay Micah [Parsons]" chants. The EDGE, of course, is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract this season. Jones must not have been listening. He gave tight end Jake Ferguson a new contract instead. Dallas and the 26-year-old pass-catcher agreed to a four-year, $52M contract extension, via NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. This move seems head-scratching. Parsons has won the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and earned two first-team All-Pro nods since the Cowboys took him with pick No. 12 in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old EDGE also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Ferguson, meanwhile, is solid but not elite. In three seasons with the Cowboys, the 2022 fourth-round pick has made one Pro Bowl and has never finished with more than 761 receiving yards in a season. An extension for Parsons will devour future cap space. The Cowboys may be worried about that after giving quarterback Dak Prescott (four years, $240M) and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (four years, $136M) long-term deals in 2024. Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt signed a lucrative three-year, $123M extension on July 17, making him the league's highest-paid non-QB. Parsons could command a similar contract. If cap space is Dallas' primary concern, however, why would it extend Ferguson? He's now set to be the NFL's seventh-highest-paid TE. The Cowboys waited to extend Lamb and Prescott just before the start of the 2024 season. They may be doing the same with Parsons. The star defender has said, "Ownership is always gonna make [contract negotiations] drag out." Regardless, the Cowboys should've paid Parsons before Ferguson. That's a much bigger priority for the team.

Commanders WR Terry McLaurin expands on ending training-camp holdout

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin had been holding out of training camp but reported Sunday. McLaurin was fined $200K ($50K per day) for skipping four days of camp. The fines, however, aren't the only reason he returned to the team's facility in Ashburn, Va. He also missed spending time with fans and teammates. According to ESPN's John Keim, supporters chanted his name at Sunday's practice, and the WR later signed autographs for approximately 30 minutes. "It feels good to be around my teammates and around the fans," the WR said, per Keim. "I can't beat that at all. They showed me a lot of love and support. You lose sight of something when the business gets involved, but I never lost sight of the way they supported me. It's business, but it has nothing to do with them." While it's a positive for the Commanders that McLaurin is no longer holding out, it's fair to wonder whether contract negotiations will continue to drag on. The WR is entering the final year of his deal and seeking an extension. (He's set to make $15.5M this season.) McLaurin and the team have made little progress in negotiations thus far. The two-time Pro Bowler recorded a career-high 13 touchdown catches in 17 games last season, but his age could be a concern for the Commanders. McLaurin turns 30 on Sept. 15. He's already injured as well. McLaurin is starting training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list because of an ankle issue. The WR is aiming to make a quick recovery and insists his age shouldn't be a factor in contract negotiations. McLaurin said the Commanders should view it on a "case-by-case" basis. McLaurin has been one of the NFL's more consistent pass-catchers, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in five of his first six seasons with Washington. Now that he's back with the team, perhaps that will remind the Commanders why they love having him around. That could expedite contract talks.

Cleveland Guardians Slapped With Bad News Before Trade Deadline

The Cleveland Guardians are quite a mystery heading into the MLB trade deadline, as no one seems to know whether they will buy, sell or possibly even do nothing before July 31. The Guardians are hovering around .500, but they are still smack dab in the middle of the American League Wild Card race. That's in spite of losing 10 straight just before the All-Star break. Even with Cleveland remaining in contention, there are some who believe the Guardians might sell given their conservative nature, but talk show host Bruce Drennan has provided some rather bad news for the team in that regard: the players they might want to move don't have much value. “No top prospects for a big bat, and I don’t necessarily see us selling players, like Carlos Santana or Lane Thomas. What can you get in return?” Drennan said. Drennan has a point. Santana and Thomas are both impending free agents, and neither has been all that good this season. Santana owns a .665 OPS, and Thomas has been on and off the injured list while hitting just .160 on the year. Of course, the Guardians would surely be able to land a hefty return for players like Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase, but it does not seem like Cleveland is going to move either of those two stars. Perhaps the Guardians will surprise some people and go all in by adding pieces at the deadline, but that isn't exactly in their nature. We'll see what happens before the end of the months, but it stands to reason that Cleveland might just stand pat, as Drennan anticipates. Read More Cleveland Guardians Coverage
