The Kansas City Royals fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in the second game of a three-game set, losing by a score of 4–2 and dropping a game below .500 at 55–56. The Royals currently sit in third place in the AL Central, nine games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers, making a division title unlikely as the season enters its final months. However, they remain just four games out of the final Wild Card spot, keeping postseason hopes alive.

Kansas City returned to the playoffs last year for the first time since their 2015 World Series title, but a disappointing offensive showing led to an ALDS exit. In response, the front office traded homegrown starting pitcher Brady Singer to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for second baseman Jonathan India.

India had established himself as an offensive threat at the top of Cincinnati’s lineup, winning National League Rookie of the Year in 2021, but his production had declined each season since.

Jonathan India's Early Exit on Saturday

India has appeared in 101 games for the Royals this year, hitting .240 with a .663 OPS, five home runs and 32 RBIs. The 28-year-old has not provided the offensive spark Kansas City hoped for, and he may not get the chance to turn things around immediately.

During Saturday’s loss to Toronto, India was removed in the top of the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist/forearm area. Postgame X-rays came back negative, but he is dealing with a contusion.

Royals May Turn to Veteran With India Sidelined

If India is forced to miss time, recently acquired veteran Adam Frazier would likely step into his role. The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Frazier to Kansas City before the deadline in exchange for minor-league infielder Cam Devanney.

The 33-year-old utility man has played in 87 games between the two clubs this season, batting .256 with a .663 OPS and four home runs.

Kansas City will hope that India can return soon and become the offensive contributor they envisioned when making the offseason trade, especially with the Wild Card race still within reach.
