Royals reportedly more open to trading Whit Merrifield than in previous seasons

The Kansas City Royals are more willing than in previous seasons to trade second baseman Whit Merrifield, according to Jayson Stark and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Merrifield, who earned his second All-Star selection this season, is slashing .272/.321/.405 with eight home runs, 51 RBI and an MLB-leading 24 stolen bases.

The 32-year-old is under contract with the Royals through the 2023 season.

After a solid start, Kansas City has fallen in the standings, owning a 38-55 record, which is good for fifth in the AL Central. The club has gone 22-46 since starting the season 16-9, and not much can be done to salvage the season.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is July 30, and Merrifield will surely be one of the most sought-after players next week.
