After missing a couple of weeks due to right shoulder inflammation, Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson took a significant step in his recovery by throwing 28 pitches in a bullpen session on Tuesday. Per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, Nelson reported feeling good and is expected to be ready to return once his stint on the injured list concludes.

Nelson’s final appearance before being placed on the IL was a rough outing against the Houston Astros on September 8th, where he allowed five earned runs over 4.2 innings. However, the Diamondbacks’ offense backed him up with a 12-6 win, masking what was otherwise a challenging start for the young right-hander.

After starting 27 games last season, Nelson has taken on another 27 starts this year, putting significant strain on his young arm, which had limited experience with a heavy workload prior to 2023. So far this season, Nelson has posted a 4.33 ERA with 125 strikeouts across 147 innings. Despite his up-and-down performances, the Diamondbacks have fared well when he takes the mound, going 16-11 in his starts.

Nelson is eligible to return on September 27th, just in time for a crucial matchup against the San Diego Padres as the Diamondbacks continue their push for a playoff spot.
