The early Christmas gifts just keep coming for Chicago Cubs fans. I’ve been calling it for weeks now, hell, if not for the past year, but folks, it finally happened.

The Cubs broke the internet last week when they announced the addition of their new star right fielder. Now, they are welcoming back another superstar, former right fielder Sammy Sosa, to the Cubs Convention 2025.

Earlier Thursday, Sosa issued a statement via Jesse Rogers of ESPN, in which he apologized for mistakes he made in the past, moving forward, and being reunited with Cubs fans once again:

In his statement, Sosa admitted to doing “whatever (he) could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep (his) strength up to perform over 162 games” and that he “never broke any laws, but in hindsight, (he) made mistakes.” He finished it by saying he has always been a Cub and couldn’t wait to see Cubs fans again.

It’s well known that Sosa has not been welcomed back to the Cubs since his retirement, which never made any sense to me, even with his PED allegations.

Like him or not, Sosa is the reason millions of fans, including myself, are Cubs fans today. Just look at any highlight of Sosa's career. Sosa doesn’t have to apologize to me for anything, but it’s nice to see him come out to the public again and express his desire to be welcomed back with the Cubs.

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts had hinted over the years of wanting an apology from the former NL MVP (which again still doesn’t make sense to me, but that’s another story). After seeing this, he issued this statement today regarding Sosa’s apology:

And just like that, Slamin Sammy is welcomed back to Wrigley.

Here's the situation: While it's frustrating that Ricketts took so long to welcome Sosa back, especially considering an apology was never necessary to begin with, the important thing is that the Cubs' home run king is finally returning. It's a positive step, but let's hope this invitation for Sosa to attend the Cubs Convention isn't just a distraction from potential budget constraints affecting the current team. That remains to be seen.

Yeah, I know; all that’s been announced so far for Sosa is an invitation to the Cubs Convention. Still, we all know there’s more to come: a Cubs Hall of Fame induction, jersey retirement, a Sammy Sosa Day at Wrigley Field, a statue, obviously, and hell, maybe even a Sammy Sosa patch on the jerseys.

It’s a good day in Cubs land today. Kiss your fingers, touch your chest 40 times, and hop around the neighborhood. Merry Christmas to all and to all Cubs fans: Sammy Sosa is coming home.
