Seattle Mariners Catcher Cal Raleigh had a memorable game last night at home against the Milwaukee Brewers. He became the first player in league history to accomplish these three things in the same game: homer in a 1-0 win, catch a shutout with two or fewer hits, and catch a dozen or more strikeouts.
Seattle’s pitching staff held up its end of the bargain to help the star catcher make history. Starting Pitcher Logan Gilbert surrendered two hits over 6.1 scoreless innings and punched out 1o. The team’s pitching staff ended the night with 13 strikeouts. This ended Milwaukee’s 11-game winning streak.
Raleigh is in the midst of a season for the ages. He is leading the league in home runs, second in RBI, second in Slugging Percentage, and third in OPS. Will he continue performing at a historic level?
Number of times in MLB history a player has:
homered in a 1-0 win: over 900
caught a 2-or-fewer-hit shutout: over 4,000
caught a dozen or more strikeouts: over 14,000
done all 3 in the same game: 1 (Cal Raleigh tonight) pic.twitter.com/UhtFe2lqJM— OptaSTATS (@OptaSTATS) July 23, 2025
Raleigh signed a six-year $105 million contract extension in March. With the way he has played in 2025, that deal has been a massive bargain. The catcher is improving off a strong 2024 campaign. He finished 12th in AL MVP voting. He also won a Gold Glove and a Platinum Glove.
He has upped the ante in 2025. He has the second-best American League MVP odds behind New York Yankees star Aaron Judge. The catcher’s continued excellence has helped him inch closer to Judge’s MVP odds.
Raleigh and the Mariners return to the diamond this afternoon for the final game of their three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers. The star catcher is seemingly making history each time he steps on the diamond. He will look to keep it going over the final 60 games of the regular season.
