Coming into the season, it was fair not to expect too much from the Seattle Mariners. While they do boast one of the best starting rotations in the sport, they failed to make any notable additions to the offense, a unit in dire need of more assistance.
That has not stopped the team from coming out of the gates strong. After their first 28 games of the year, they hold a 16-12 record and first place in the American League West. And the offense has been a big part of their success.

They have been so successful throughout the 2025 campaign that they have continued to climb their way up the various power rankings. In the most recent edition from The Athletic, their staff has the Mariners ranked 11th in MLB, up one spot from last week.
"Gilbert logged 208 2/3 innings last year, more than any other starter in the American League," writes Andy McCullough. "He was a trendy pick for the Cy Young Award this year. His 6-6, 215-pound frame looked like it offered him the best chance of any homegrown Mariners starter to avoid injury. Alas. Gilbert was placed on the injured list with a flexor strain in his elbow after leaving a start early on Friday. His injury occurred just as George Kirby, the other young Mariners All-Star pitcher, was making progress in his recovery from a shoulder injury. Pitching, man. Pitching."
The pitching was not to be as concerning as it has been for Seattle, but the injury to Logan Gilbert has certainly thrown a wrench into their plans. Gilbert was leading the charge and looking to secure his standing as a legitimate ace in MLB with his 2.36 ERA across his first six starts, but now will have to wait until he returns from injury to see that come to fruition.

Somehow, the Mariners have been able to chug along. And even without Gilbert, if the offense can continue to perform as it has, it will be hard to stop the surge from Seattle.
