Seattle Mariners Fire Manager Scott Servais
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Mariners fired Manager Scott Servais earlier today according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal. This decision came on the heels of Seattle dropping eight of their last 10 games and three in a row. Servais managed the Seattle Mariners for nine seasons and finished with a record of 680-642 and made the MLB Playoffs in 2022 for the only time in his tenure. They would go on to get swept by the eventual World Series champion Houston Astros in the ALDS.

Seattle has reportedly tapped former big league Catcher Dan Wilson to be the team’s skipper for the remainder of the 2024 regular season. Wilson is no stranger to the Seattle Mariners organization as he played 12 seasons for the ballclub(1994-2005). Will the team be able to rally around their new manager and play themselves back into the American League playoff picture?

Seattle Mariners Season Summary

Seattle(64-64) is in second place in the American League West and 7.5 games back of the third and final American League Wild Card spot. The team presumably decided to move on from Servais due to the team’s sluggish offense this season, and especially over the last few weeks. The Seattle Mariners offense is last in batting average, 15th in home runs, and 27th in runs scored. Their offense is paced by Center Fielder Julio Rodriguez and Catcher Cal Raleigh. Rodriguez leads the team in batting average while Raleigh is top 20 in the league in home runs and RBI.

The Seattle Mariners once again boast one of the best pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. They lead the league in ERA, are 10th in strikeouts, and first in opposing batting average and WHIP. Starting Pitchers Luis Castillo and Logan Gilbert help anchor a stellar staff. Castillo leads the Mariners in wins and is 15th in the league in strikeouts. Gilbert is 15th in the league in ERA, tenth in strikeouts, and leads the league in WHIP.

Mariners

A truly terrible stretch of games has the Seattle Mariners in a rough spot with a little more than 30 games left in the regular season. According to ESPN, Seattle only has a 12.8% chance of making the 2024 MLB Playoffs. The Mariners have a day off today before beginning a three-game series at home against the San Francesco Giants tomorrow evening.

Dan Wilson will not have much time to fix an ailing Seattle Mariners offense. Seattle entered the 2024 season with lofty expectations and has underachieved. The team is talent-laden and is running out of time to make a playoff push. Only time will tell if firing Servais this late in the season will be a wise decision.
