Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President and General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster move to designate Casey Lawrence for assignment, and in the corresponding move, the club has activated right-hander Trent Thornton.

Thornton, 31, was placed on the 15-day Injured List with appendicitis on May 9, which was retroactive to May 6. He was the most-used Mariners relief pitcher at the time, and in 16 relief appearances for Seattle this season, he is 1–0 with a 5.87 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched with 11 punchouts.

The right-hander has appeared in 7 Major League seasons with Toronto from 2019–23 and Seattle starting in 2023. He was acquired by the Mariners from the Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Mason McCoy in July 2023.

Lawrence, 37, has served 5 stints on the Mariners active roster this season and made 5 relief appearances, going 1–2 with a 3.00 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched. He also has made 1 appearance with the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing 3 runs over 2.2 innings on April 29. His last appearance with Seattle came on May 20 at the White Sox, where he tossed 5 innings in a bulk appearance.

In 4 appearances, which include three starts with Triple-A Tacoma, Lawrence is 0–1 with a 4.91 ERA through 14.2 innings pitched and 13 punchouts.
