After losing three out of four games in a weekend series against the Houston Astros, it's a good thing that the Seattle Mariners have a day off on Monday. They need some time to lick their wounds from a rough few games.
The Mariners entered the series against the Astros at Daikin Park in Houston with a little room to breathe atop the American League West Division standings. Now? The margin for error has tightened with Seattle only up 1 1/2 games over the Astros.
Adding insult to injury, first-year Mariners manager Dan Wilson was ejected by home plate umpire Laz Diaz late in Sunday's 5-3 loss. It was the first time Wilson had been tossed this season. He was ticked off about some calls made against Randy Arozarena in the ninth inning and a 3-3 tie game.

Wilson knows the drill about not being able to argue balls and strikes. He even admitted as much in a postgame press conference.
“You can't argue balls and strikes, and so that was that,” Wilson said, MLB.com reported. “But I think these guys, you know, they fight hard. Their at-bats are so good, and all the way through the day, just really good at-bats. And so you feel for them a little bit, and you feel some of their frustration. But at the same time, it was just a tough one today.”
Reliever Casey Legumina took over in the bottom of the ninth inning for Seattle. He gave up a leadoff single to Jose Altuve, then threw a pitch in Walker's wheelhouse and he didn't miss it. Christian Walker hit a laser that reached the second row of the friendly Crawford Boxes at Daikin Park.

Game, set, match, Astros.
Starter Luis Castillo worked six innings for the Mariners, gutting it out for a 3-2 lead entering the home half of the sixth inning. But he gave up a game-tying double to Astros rookie Cam Smith before leaving, sinking Seattle to a 3-3 tie and setting up the late-game fireworks.
“That's what we train for,” Castillo said through an interpreter after the game. “That's why we work. We train our bodies, our arms. But unfortunately, we didn't get the win today. But I feel good.”
The Mariners, as noted earlier, are off on Memorial Day. They will open a three-game series at home against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
