Seattle Mariners Starting Pitcher Logan Gilbert dominated earlier today on the road against the Miami Marlins. He tossed eight innings and punched out six as the Mariners cruised to a 9-1 victory. This is the second consecutive start in which Gilbert tossed eight innings. He threw eight innings while striking out nine last week against the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers.
Seattle’s offense had a breakout performance down in the “Sunshine State” and Gilbert took care of the rest. He allowed only four hits over his eight innings of work this afternoon. Gilbert is 5-4 this season with an ERA of 2.71. He is also third in the league with a WHIP of 0.89. Will Gilbert be able to keep up his great level of pitching in his next start and beyond?
Gilbert made his Major League debut in 2021 with the Seattle Mariners. He has spent all four of his career seasons with the team. Gilbert has been one of the best pitchers in the American League over the last few years, notching 13 wins in both 2022 and 2023. He helped lead the Seattle Mariners to the third-best regular season ERA in the league last year.
Gilbert has a career record of 37-22 with an ERA of 3.57.
Seattle(45-34) holds a seven-game lead in the American League West. The Mariners offense has been poor this season. They have the second-worst batting average, are ninth in home runs, and 20th in runs scored. Their underwhelming offense is led by Center Fielder Julio Rodriguez and Catcher Cal Raleigh. Rodriguez leads the ballclub with a .264 batting average while Raleigh leads the team in both home runs and RBI.
As has been the case in recent years, the pitching staff of the Seattle Mariners has led the way for the team in 2024. They are seventh in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and tied for the league lead in opposing batting average. Luis Castillo leads the team with six wins while Logan Gilbert leads them in ERA and strikeouts.
The Mariners have found their form in recent weeks winning 10 of their last 14 games.
The next scheduled start for Gilbert is on Friday, June 28, at home against the Minnesota Twins. He faced Minnesota earlier this year and had his worst start of the season. Gilbert surrendered eight runs over four innings of work on May 9 as the Seattle Mariners were dominated 11-1.
Seattle plays the final game of their three-game set against the Miami Marlins tomorrow afternoon. They take a trip north as they remain in Florida for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays beginning on Monday.
The Mariners look well on their way to making the MLB Playoffs after narrowly missing out last season. For the team to reach its fullest potential, the pitching staff must continue holding up their end of the bargain as the offense looks to round into form before it is too late.
