Seattle Mariners Receive Top Grade for MLB Trade Deadline Work

The Seattle Mariners are dead serious about getting back in position for regaining the lead in the American League West Division. Seattle made some key pickups at the MLB Trade Deadline, adding another home run bat to go along with catcher Cal Raleigh.

What did the Mariners do? Oh, they just added Eugenio Suárez in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They also did some additional trades as well, worthy enough to receive an "A" grade in an MLB Trade Deadline roundup from The Athletic.

"The Mariners were huge trade deadline winners, filling their most significant team needs on the infield corners by acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Diamondbacks in separate deals — and to land the pair, they didn’t even have to give up their very best prospects," longtime MLB general manager and MLB Network analyst Jim Bowden wrote.

Eugenio Suárez gives Mariners a massive boost as they seek to regain AL West Division top spot over the Houston Astros

"With Suárez joining Cal Raleigh, Seattle has a chance to have the first duo of hitters with 50 homers in a season apiece since 1961, when Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris did it for the Yankees," Bowden wrote.

"The Mariners also bolstered their bullpen with lefty Caleb Ferguson, who ranks in the 97th percentile or higher in hard-hit rate, barrel percentage and average exit velocity," Bowden wrote. "Jerry Dipoto was under some pressure at this deadline, and he delivered. In my opinion, the Mariners are now the favorites to win the AL West and they have a real shot to win that elusive first World Series in franchise history."

Let's break down Suárez's numbers heading into action on Saturday, August 2. He's hitting .248 with 36 homers and 87 RBIs, according to StatMuse. He's got an OPB of .319 and a .572 slugging percentage. Suárez also has coaxed 29 walks as well. The Mariners have a one-two power punch with him and Raleigh, who has 42 homers this season. Naylor is hitting .288 with 12 home runs and 61 RBIs.

Entering Saturday's home game against the Texas Rangers, the Mariners are 3.5 games behind the AL West-leading Houston Astros. The Mariners pulled off a late comeback against the Rangers on Friday night as J.P. Crawford slammed a two-run, game-winning homer with Miles Mastrobuoni scoring as well for a 4-3 Seattle win.

With these moves, look for the Mariners to put the pressure on the Astros as they stay in the hunt for an AL postseason spot.
