While the Seattle Mariners are doing their best to stay relevant in the American League West Division race, all eyes are on catcher Cal Raleigh. It's been an amazing season so far for Raleigh, who hit his 39th home run on Tuesday, July 22.
Seattle rode that lone run, backed by stellar pitching from Luis Castillo, to post a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The victory snapped the Brewers' 11-game winning streak, too.
Right now, the Mariners are sitting at the No. 11 spot in the latest MLB Power Rankings, according to The Athletic. Last week, Seattle was at No. 13. But the big question out there for Mariners fans is can the "Big Dumper" hit 60 homers this season? He's two-thirds of the way there right now.

Grant Brisbee of The Athletic offers his thoughts on the matter. "Forget the all-time record for catchers — can Big Dumper get to 60 homers?" Brisbee wrote. "Salvador Pérez holds the record for 48 catcher home runs, a record he set in 2021. Cal Raleigh is just 10 homers behind that with more than 60 games to go. Assuming regular health, that’s a record that’s as good as broken.
"Can he get to 60, though? That’s much trickier," Brisbee wrote. "Every slugger hits a dry patch; Raleigh’s just hasn’t come yet. Maybe it’ll never come, and he’s certainly on pace. Another storyline to watch is with the Mariners’ postseason chase, but in a way, that’s a part of the same storyline."
Raleigh is hitting .256 to go along with his 39 homers and 84 RBIs. He's got an OPS of .988 and a .619 slugging percentage. The numbers tell the tale of one guy totally obliterating baseballs left and right. Seattle is going to need Raleigh's slugging ways to continue.
Of course, the Mariners could use more offense from guys like Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena. Arozarena has made himself quite valuable to Seattle this season. As for J-Rod? Seattle fans always want to see more out of their incredible star player.
For the Mariners to get back into the AL West race in a meaningful way, they need to be clicking on all cylinders on the mound and at the plate. Otherwise, they'll need to just settle for a possible AL Wild Card spot.
