The Seattle Mariners are definitely in groove. With their 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday, the Mariners have now won eight consecutive for the first time in nearly four years.

The last time Seattle pulled off a similar streak was June 21-July 17, 2022, also eight in a row. The Mariners went to the playoffs that year as a Wild Card.

These Mariners (20-12) are leading the American League West by three games going into Sunday’s series finale at Texas. Seattle’s run differential of plus-36 is the third best in the American League.

The M’s are 16-4 in their last 20 games following a 4-8 start this season. Seattle also owns the Rangers, going 5-0 against Texas so far in 2025 and has won 18 of its last 22 games against Texas since Sept. 28, 2023.

There were plenty of standouts in the latest victory over Texas. Starting pitcher Luis Castillo made his seventh start of the season and turned in his third quality start of the year despite not factoring into the decision. He went 6.0 innings, gave up four hits, one earned run, struck out two and walked two on 88 pitches, 58 for strikes.

He has logged at least 5.0 innings in six starts, with two-or-less walks in each of those outings. Castillo has allowed just four hits in each of his last three starts vs. Texas, going 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in those games. He surrendered an RBI single to Jonah Heim in the fourth inning, then retired nine of his last 11 batters faced and was relieved by Matt Brash to begin the seventh.

Rowdy Tellez delivered the game-winner, putting the Mariners ahead 2-1 in the ninth inning with a pinch-hit RBI single to score Jorge Polanco from third base. Tellez is 3-for-3 with one home run and three RBI as a pinch hitter in 2025 and 6-for-16 (.375) with one homer and five RBI in five games vs. Texas this season.

J.P. Crawford got the M’s on the board first by homering on the first pitch of the game. It was his 12th career leadoff home run, which ranks second in club history behind Ichiro Suzuki (37). Crawford also tallied his third career homer on the first pitch of the game, breaking a tie with Ichiro, who had two, for the most such round-trippers in Mariners history.
