Seattle Mariners Starting Pitcher George Kirby has had great control over the first 100 starts of his career. He has issued 77 walks through 100 career starts. That is at least 10 fewer walks than any other pitcher who made his debut in the modern era. Carlos Silva has the next fewest walks through 100 career starts with 87.
Kirby’s season has not gone according to plan. He is 4-5 with a 4.65 ERA. He did not make his season debut until May because of a shoulder injury he suffered in Spring Training. Will he continue keeping runners off the basepaths at a historic rate?

Kirby debuted with the Seattle Mariners in 2022. He finished sixth in Rookie of the Year voting. He followed it up with an All-Star selection in 2023 and finished eighth in Cy Young Award voting. He has been unable to regain the form he exhibited over the first two seasons of his career.
Kirby’s next start should come later this week on the road against the Los Angeles Angels. He will look to keep his walks low to get back on track over the summer. If he can do so, it will help the Mariners maintain their spot in the postseason picture.
