Seattle Mariners Take Much-Needed Break with Division Lead

It was only three games between off days, but you can never have too much rest. With no game on Thursday, the Seattle Mariners are holding on tight to the American League West lead as the calendar flips to May.

It is the first of three consecutive Thursday off days for the M's, and they will be much-needed this month. The schedule continues to be grueling, with three contests against the Texas Rangers, three against the New York Yankees, three against the San Diego Padres and four against the Houston Astros.

All of those games take place before May 25, with 10 taking place over 14 days from May 12-25. As a team that has already played one of the hardest schedules in MLB to this point in the season, it does not get much easier.

April was a strong month for the Mariners, though it did not start that way. Entering the off day on April 10, Seattle held a record for the month of just 3-5 across its first eight games.

However, since April 10, the Mariners played to a strong 13-4 record for the rest of the month. This gives them a 16-9 record in April alone, 1.5 games better than the 15-11 record in April 2024.

The M's ended the month of April on a four-game win streak and seven straight series wins. Entering April 30, they held a two-game lead in the American League West, which is where it still stands going into Thursday.

The offense as a whole has yet to show up this season, but that has not mattered. The contributions from Jorge Polanco, Cal Raleigh, Dylan Moore and J.P. Crawford have been more than enough to get the job done behind the heralded rotation the organization has developed.

There is still a lot of baseball left to play, but if there is one thing we learned from the Mariners in April, it is that they are here to compete, and they are legit. The rest of the AL West has been put on notice. The tridents are up, and they are ready for more.
