Seattle Mariners Tick Up One Spot in MLB Power Rankings

It's been quite a journey for the Seattle Mariners this season, who put their stamp on the American League West Division top spot early. Yet the Mariners have slipped down a bit since their hot start. Now, the team wants to get back into a secure spot for the AL postseason.

Seattle has been riding the hot bat of catcher Cal Raleigh, who has 41 homers to his name at this time. He's headed toward a 60-home run season if he can stay healthy. Thanks to his efforts and some improved play, the Mariners now sit in the No. 10 spot in the latest MLB Power Rankings, according to The Athletic.

Andy McCullough of The Athletic takes a bird's-eye view of what's happening with Seattle right now. "In the past four seasons, the Mariners have finished with 90 wins, 90 wins, 88 wins and 85 wins," McCullough wrote.

"That success has netted just one postseason appearance, back in 2022," he wrote. "If the team stumbles down the stretch, this year could look like more of the same — a winning record but a seat on the couch in October.

Seattle Mariners are still looking for additional offensive pop for their lineup as season rolls into August

"This is why president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto is working the phones to add help for his offense. Dipoto has already added Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor. An upgrade at third base wouldn’t hurt, either."

Ben Williamson has been the everyday third baseman for the Mariners this season. He's hitting at a .256 clip with one home run and 21 RBIs with a .608 slugging percentage. While Williamson has provided a level of stability at the "hot corner," finding a player who could add more offensive punch to the Seattle lineup would help a lot.

What about center fielder Julio Rodríguez? He's been viewed as the future big star in Seattle for some time. He's hitting .253 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs while putting together a .739 slugging percentage. Rodríguez has been a big cog in the Mariners' lineup thanks to his power numbers.

If Seattle is able to add another bat with some pop to its lineup, the Mariners just might find themselves back in first place in the AL West. Trying to wrest that title from the Houston Astros will be topic No. 1 every day until the season ends.
