Chicago White Sox pitcher Drew Thorpe's comeback trail has taken a disappointing detour. Thorpe, who had been working towards a return to the mound after last season's elbow surgery, encountered what has ominously been described as "discomfort" in his elbow during a rehab start, putting his return this season into question.

Thorpe's efforts to rejoin the Chicago rotation experienced a significant setback during a minor league outing in Arizona. After a seemingly smooth first inning, the right-hander signaled to the dugout with concern, leading to an immediate exit from the game.

White Sox manager Will Venable expressed some concern when asked about Thorpe's exit, stating, "It’s really unfortunate. He’s been working so hard, and we hope that this is just a hiccup and he can get back on track." These words underscore a hovering uncertainty around Thorpe’s immediate future as both the Sox and fans await further clarity on the timeline for his return.

Thorpe's 2024 season was cut short due to season-ending surgery to address a bone spur in his right elbow, an issue that remains a significant hurdle. Despite a promising start with the White Sox -- highlighted by a potent changeup that kept hitters batting a mere .164 against it -- Thorpe's overall performance was marred by a lackluster 5.48 ERA and a worrying strikeout-to-walk ratio. These stats, frankly speaking, placed him among the less effective starters in the league, underscoring a need for improvement from the young hurler.

In light of Thorpe's setback, the spotlight turns to Shane Smith, the team’s top pick in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. Smith, who impressed in the Cactus League and saw a notable increase in his fastball velocity, is now poised to clinch a spot in the White Sox starting rotation.
