Shohei Ohtani Won American League Player Of The Week
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani was named American League Player of the Week on Tuesday, his fifth career weekly award.

He became the first member of the Angels to receive the award since current teammate Reid Detmers won it last season after tossing a no-hitter. Alongside Ohtani, Michael Harris II of the Atlanta Braves took home the National League honors.

This award is Ohtani’s first since winning it on July 6, 2021. After his terrific performance this past week when he hit .435 with six home runs, smacked two doubles, drove in 12 RBI with nine runs scored and one steal.

Highlighted by his 1.304 slugging percentage, he also posted a .588 on-base percentage. On the mound, he moved his record to 6-2 with a 3.29 ERA after allowing two runs over six innings, collecting a win over the Texas Rangers.

He is the current Major League home run leader, registering a hit in each of the seven games, while collecting at least one RBI in five of those contests.

He opened his week with a two-homer, four-RBI showing in the Angels’ 9-6 win over the Texas Rangers.

Shohei Ohtani voted into 2023 MLB All-Star Game

Ohtani was named to the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game after leading the American League following Phase one of fan voting.

After receiving 2,646,307 votes, he earned the nod as the starting designated hitter for the AL squad. This is Ohtani’s third straight All-Star Game selection.

He joins fellow Angels Mike Trout in 2019 and Rod Carew in 1979, who also led the AL in fan voting. He’s the 10th Angels player in club history to earn three All-Star Game selections as a position player.

So far this season, Ohtani has posted a combined 4.7 WAR, leading all of baseball.
