ST. LOUIS – The Arizona Diamondbacks couldn’t leave St. Louis fast enough after one of the most frustrating series of the season led to getting swept for the first time in the 2025 season.

It was the third game in a row where Arizona’s pitching hit a wall in the later innings. Pfaadt was decent on Sunday going 5.2 innings and giving up three earned runs on five hits. The Snakes just weren’t able to provide run support.

Same old song and dance:

Top of the fourth inning, D-Backs had another early opportunity. Eugenio Suárez and Pavin Smith had back to back singles to begin the inning, yet Arizona was unable to come away with any runs. Alek Thomas grounded out into a fielders choice, Gabriel Moreno struck out looking, and Geraldo Perdomo grounded out to end the inning stranding both runners. This problem coming back and rearing its ugly head is the last thing Arizona needs right now.

In the sixth inning, Eugenio Suárez hit a one-out double. Pavin Smith took advantage of the opportunity right away and hit a single into right field that scored Suárez giving the Snakes a 3-2 lead. Another two runs were stranded on base in the sixth inning after another Geraldo Perdomo ground out.

In the bottom of the sixth the Cardinals tie the game after Pfaadt gave up a couple hits. A sacrifice fly tied the game up for St. Louis at three runs a piece. Brandon Pfaadt exited in the sixth inning after a decent and manageable outing.

Kevin Ginkel took over, and in the bottom of the seventh gave up a single to Jordan Walker. After a ground out from Pedro Pagés, Jalen Beeks entered and allowed another single to Victor Scott II that scored Walker that eventually was the winning run. It was a heartbreaker when Scott II’s ground ball went off of Ketel Marte’s glove in the bottom of the seventh, as the bad bounces all around for Arizona continue.

The Snakes were swept for the first time of the 2025 season and will look to regroup as they head back to the desert for a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
