Following the departure of shortstop Willy Adames, the Milwaukee Brewers' infield remains unfinalized for the 2025 season. Platinum Glove-winning second baseman Brice Turang and 26-year-old Joey Ortiz are expected to retain starting roles, but one infield spot is still up for grabs.
Although Adames' exit leaves the shortstop position vacant, the situation is further complicated by the versatility of Turang and Ortiz, as both players are capable of filling the shortstop role themselves. With a lot of depth in the infield, second-year Brewers manager Pat Murphy will have to figure out the perfect combination of players come Opening Day.
The candidates
Oliver Dunn
Milwaukee acquired Oliver Dunn from the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2024 season to bolster its infield depth. Previously playing in the minors with the Phillies, Dunn made his official MLB debut with the Brewers. What sets him apart from other candidates is that he is the only left-handed batter among them. His 2024 season, in which he logged 156 innings — 153 of them at third base — gives him a notable edge in terms of familiarity with the team.
In four games this spring, Dunn has displayed consistency at the plate, batting .357 (5-for-14) and demonstrating his power with a home run in Monday's game against the Seattle Mariners.

Vinny Capra
Capra has bounced around the league, joining the Brewers in 2024 — his third team in as many years. In limited major league action with Milwaukee, he posted a .111 batting average (1-for-9) over 23 innings, with 18 innings at third base and five at shortstop. In Triple-A in 2024, Capra slashed .261/.348/.382 with eight home runs, 26 doubles and 53 RBI in 110 games.
Despite a quiet 2024 season, Capra is making significant noise this spring. Over four games, he's batting .385 (5-for-13) with three home runs and seven RBI, including a walk-off home run in the Brewers' first spring training game.

Andruw Monasterio
Monasterio has been with the Milwaukee organization the longest, beginning his journey with the Biloxi Shuckers in 2022. After making his MLB debut in 2023, he has served as a reliable bench depth option for the Brewers. In 2024, he logged 312 innings in the field, including 127 at second base and 167 at third. Should he secure a spot in the starting lineup, it would likely require Turang or Ortiz to shift to shortstop.
This spring, Monasterio has played well, batting .400 (4-for-10) with an on-base percentage of .538.

Caleb Durbin
In December, Milwaukee traded two-time NL Reliever of the Year Devin Williams to the New York Yankees, receiving Caleb Durbin as part of the return. Durbin is perhaps the most intriguing prospect of the group.
Although he has yet to make his MLB debut, Durbin’s chances within Milwaukee's roster look promising. Last season, he played 90 games in the minors, posting a .275/.388/.451 slash line with 10 home runs, 60 RBI and 31 stolen bases. His base-stealing ability sets him apart, drawing comparisons to Turang. In the field, Durbin logged 378.2 innings at second base, 170.1 at shortstop and 157 at third base, showcasing his versatility and making him a flexible option for Pat Murphy to use across the infield.
While starting slow in spring training, Durbin collected his first home run with the Brewers on Friday.

While Milwaukee could still pursue a trade for an infielder — such as Ryan McMahon, as recent rumors suggest — the following candidates are likely the leading options to secure a starting role in 2025.
