Struggling MLB Pitcher Finds New Home With Mets

The New York Mets have added another left-handed arm to their pitching depth, claiming reliever Philip Abner off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported the move on X after the Giants designated Abner for assignment earlier this week. The 24-year-old lefty now joins his third organization of the 2026 season after previously pitching for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Abner struggled during his time in the majors this season, posting a 7.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 19 innings between Arizona and San Francisco. He also recorded a 14.4% strikeout rate and 13.5% walk rate during that stretch.

Abner’s short stint with the Giants ended after he made five appearances for the club. He posted a 9.64 ERA and 2.14 WHIP across 4 2/3 innings, according to NBC Sports.

The Giants designated him for assignment on Sept. 21 after selecting outfielder Bo Davidson’s contract. MLB’s transaction log confirms the move before Abner was claimed by New York.

The Mets will give Abner an opportunity to continue developing as a young left-handed reliever. His 2026 results have been rough, but his age gives New York another arm to evaluate as it looks toward its future bullpen.

To create room for Abner on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated right-hander Xzavion Curry for assignment. Curry appeared in nine games for New York this season and posted a 5.48 ERA over 21 1/3 innings.
