Sunday's MLB stars of the day: Sunday scaries

Another week of MLB concluded with the Philadelphia Phillies' 3-1 win over the Chicago Cubs in extra innings on "Sunday Night Baseball."

The San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals were gifted walk-off wins by awful defensive plays while the Athletics earned a walk-off win with a huge swing of the bat.

Here are four stars from Sunday's action:

Noelvi Marte, 3B, Cincinnati Reds

After a down year in 2024 for one of the top prospects in the Reds system, Marte was optioned to Triple-A to begin the season.

He was surprisingly recalled to the major league roster less than two weeks into the season, and he has made the absolute most of it.

Marte went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the Reds' 8-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. It improved his season average to .364 and helped Cincinnati finish off a sweep of Colorado.

Tarik Skubal, SP, Detroit Tigers

The reigning AL Cy Young winner has looked shaky over his last few starts, but he dialed back in on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Skubal went six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out 11 batters. The start lowered his season ERA to 2.34 and it may mean that he has returned to the form that helped him win the first Cy Young award in 2024.

Andy Pages, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers

In a big-time 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pages was the star of the game in a stacked Dodgers lineup.

He went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and 4 RBIs to help the Dodgers secure a series win over the Pirates.

It was a much-needed day at the plate for Pages whose average was down as low as .216 just as recent as Friday night.

Joe Ryan, SP, Minnesota Twins

Ryan had the best performance of the day by a pitcher, outdueling Skubal, his AL Central counterpart.

Ryan shut down the Los Angeles Angels lineup, going seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits, walking one and striking out 11.

It was an excellent bounce back start for Ryan who was roughed up for eight hits and six runs against the Atlanta Braves a week ago.

Andrew Wright

Andrew "Dew" Wright graduated from Charleston Southern University with a degree in Communication Studies. He is a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Washington Commanders fan.
