Superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor appeared to send a subtle but strong message to Mets teammate Juan Soto

It's been a tough week for New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto.

Soto has been heavily criticized by the media for his perceived lack of hustle -- specifically on two plays; a check-swing groundout against the New York Yankees on Sunday night and a long single off the Green Monster against the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

The 26-year-old outfielder thought he hit a home run on Monday night against Boston. The ball, however, didn't clear the Green Monster, instead bouncing off the wall to Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran. Soto, who watched the ball instead of running to first, was unable to reach second base (though he stole second on the next pitch).

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor hit a home run over the Green Monster on Wednesday night in the series finale. It wasn't obvious, though, that the ball was going to clear the wall. As a result, Lindor got out of the box quickly to ensure that he would get to second base if the ball didn't get over the Green Monster.

After the game, Lindor was asked by MLB Network's Jon Morosi about his home run.

Lindor's response was interesting considering Soto's failure to reach second base earlier this week.

"You never know, the wind's been playing a little different here," said Lindor when asked if he knew that the ball was going to go out for a home run. "And we've been talking about, the way they play it here, they hit the ball up in the sky to left field and they run hard. So as soon as I hit it, I just said, 'run, run'. And then I heard people screaming, so that's when I knew it was out."

Lindor was complimentary of Soto later in the interview, praising him for being "the same guy" every day regardless of his struggles. So I certainly don't think there's any "drama" between the two players. Lindor, though, is an elite leader. It's clear that Lindor is leading by example, and the way he ran to second base seemed like it was a message to Soto and the rest of the team. Essentially, it was his way of saying this is how we play the game every night regardless of the situation.
