Surprise All-Star Trade Target Could Reshape Yankees' Infield

In a market that’s shaping up to be thin, ESPN’s David Schoenfield has floated a name that could make real sense for the Yankees: Willi Castro.

“Castro’s versatility is key,” Schoenfield wrote. “He could play third or he could play the outfield. With Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt tailing off from their hot starts, Castro and Cody Bellinger would give manager Aaron Boone all kinds of lineup flexibility.”

It’s not a blockbuster name, but it’s a realistic fit.

Castro was an All-Star last season and is quietly putting up even better numbers this year—slashing .266/.351/.430 with seven home runs. He’s a switch-hitter who brings defensive flexibility, having made 94 career appearances at third base.

For the Yankees, that flexibility could be the key.

Slot Castro in at third, move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second, and suddenly the infield makes a lot more sense. DJ LeMahieu, who’s struggled all season, would be pushed to the bench in Schoenfield's scenario.

But there’s a roster cost here that all these trade proposals overlook.

Castro’s arrival would force the Yankees into a difficult choice: either DFA Oswald Peraza, leaving the team without a true backup shortstop, or designate LeMahieu, who still has a year left on his six-year, $90 million contract.

That is why a reunion with Isiah Kiner-Falefa may make more sense.

Castro will be a free agent after the season, so this would be a rental. The Yankees must weigh this against the idea of adding a switch-hitting spark plug who can defend, move around the field, and give the Yankees a starting infield that makes more sense.

The Yankees have to do something. No trade will be a perfect fit, but Castro might be one of the more realistic.
