The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres have turned into a bit of a rivalry and the latest chapter had a lot of chippiness involved. During Thursday’s series finale between the teams, tempers flared in the ninth inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit in the hand. Manager Mike Shildt would head to the Dodgers’ dugout and confront manager Dave Roberts before the benches cleared. Major League Baseball officially issued out the punishments for the incident and it was interesting to say the least.
According to Buster Olney, one player and both managers have received discipline from the league in regard to Thursday’s incident. Both San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts have been fined and suspended for one game and both will serve the suspension on Friday during their team’s respective games. Padres reliever Robert Suarez was suspended for three games as he pitched in the game and hit Shohei Ohtani in the bottom of the ninth after the benches were cleared in what the league deemed intentional. However, Suarez is appealing the suspension and will be allowed to play until the appeal is officially heard.
Following Thursday’s game, Suarez was asked if he intentionally hit Ohtani, which Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. However, Suarez claimed it was not.
“They can say whatever they want. That was not the case.”
It will be interesting to see how this rivalry continues as they play another six regular season games against one another. Will tempers continue to flare with these teams competing for the NL West crown and dominance in the National Leauge as a whole?
