Tanner Banks Will Open Tonight Against Texas
Stephen Brashear-USA TODAY Sports

Scott Merkin of MLB.com tweeted that Tanner Banks is the opener tonight, per the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox begin a three-game series at home against the Rangers following a disappointing west coast road trip. Banks has experience as a multi-inning reliever and will likely pitch up to three innings.

The Chicago White Sox recalled Tanner Banks after Liam Hendriks landed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation. The lefty is amid his second stint with the big league club. Banks has 11.2 innings in six major league appearances with a 3.86 ERA and 0.943 WHIP thus far

Picking Up The Slack

The former 18th-round pick won't overwhelm hitters but is adequate, depending on his usage. Banks made his MLB debut last year at 30 years old after being selected in the 2014 MLB Draft by the White Sox and put together a respectable season.

The White Sox will likely turn to Jesse Scholtens to carry most of the innings after Banks exits the game. Chicago called up Scholtens to replace Mike Clevinger, who landed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. Tonight's contest falls on Clevinger's spot in the rotation. The White Sox employed Reynaldo Lopez for two innings as an opener last year against Texas in an 8-3 win.

What's On Tap Next?

It's a tough matchup for two pitchers light on MLB experience. The Rangers’ powerful lineup has scored the most runs among American League teams. The White Sox offense may need to snap out of its recent slump if Banks and Scholtens can't keep Texas at bay.
